Poultry 20

Your poultry focus – egg or meat

Your poultry focus - egg or meat
Can I quickly ask a question – “why do you have a poultry?
Do you intend to make profit from the poultry output or it is just for your consumption and pleasure?
If your answer to the question above is to make profit  – How do you intend to make profit from your poultry farm venture?
If the answer to the question above is  not clear in your mind, you need to do these two things –
  • Sit back and get clarity on your farm purpose
  • In addition, decide on definite procedures  for your farm operations
(particularly if you are not happy about current yield from your poultry farm).
There are two (2) major produce that can be harvested from a poultry farm – Egg production or Meat production  Relatively, depending of the farm produce there is a slight difference in some basic  requirement  and nature of the  poultry
These are some of the things that distinct an egg producing poultry from a meat producing poultry –
S/N EGG PRODUCING POULTRY MEAT PRODUCING POULTRY
1 The bird to rear for egg is Layer
(or pullet)
The bird you rear can be broiler,
cockerel
2 The duration of each batch of bird
is relatively long as birds can lay egg from week 20 to week 75
The duration of each batch of bird
is relatively short as it is targeted to specific festivity or market
(usually between 10weeks to 16weeks)
3 It is important to consider process
of egg collection in the type of housing provided from the week 20 of the
birds
Egg collection is not applicable
4 Feed does not require high content
of fat and protein
Feed requires high content of protein
and fats to facilitate faster growth and weight
5 Caged housing system recommended to
avoid wastage of eggs
Deep litters housing system can be
adopted.

Please note that clarity on the focus of the poultry farm offers the following benefits –

  • Promote optimal utilization of available resources for the farm operations
  • Guides farm operations and decision process to gain maximized productivity
  • Assist farm operation for success and reduces the risk of making (costly) mistakes
  • Promote the sustainability of the farm operations
