Bitter leaf (Vernonia anygladina) is a vegetable commonly referred to as a herb because of its medicinal properties, some of  which include –

  • It contains Saponins which enables it to disrupt bacterial and viral cell membranes consequently making it useful for preventing disease in poultry.
  • It contains Alkaloids which strengthens the birds body defense mechanism, thereby, boosting the immunity system.
  • It contains Terpenoids which improve gut motility, reduce stress and anxiety in the birds.
  • It it contains essential oils which clears mucus and open up airways for better respiratory system.
  • It contains Tannins which have drying effect on intestinal lining, thereby, reducing fluid loss and treats diarrhea in the poultry

Bitter leaf can be used in treating and preventing diseases in poultry birds in the fresh or died form. It can be  be blended or squeezed to extract the juice which can be added to the flock’s drinking water  or the leaves be dried and grinded to be added to the feed for the flock.

 Integrating bitter to the diet of the flocks offers the following benefits –

  • Bitter leave works as an effective antibiotics protecting the poultry against the attack of harmful organisms like, bacteria, parasites’ and protozoa  that cause diseases
  • It helps to prevent disease and supports the overall health of the birds to be better

  • It works as a booster for growth by increasing intestinal enzymes which aids effective and efficient food conversion in the poultry.

The most common way of including bitter leaf to the diet of poultry among poultry farmers is by extracting the juice of the leaf and adding same to the water served to the birds. Personally, I extract the juice but sometimes slice the leaf and mix it with a little feed which I serve to the birds (both ways work; none has  failed in achieving my purposes

 Poultry organic treatment with bitter leaf is an effective way of supporting the poultry health care leveraging on the various medicinal properties of he leaf,, however, it is important to use in moderation and  monitor the reaction of the birds when introducing bitter leaf into the birds’ diet.  Generally, when using bitter leaf as a preventive medicine, a small quantity just about 1-2% of the total feed is recommended.
